Remember the story about building houses? A house built with wisdom vs. a foolishly built? For the younger generation, think back to the story of the three little pigs!
When faced with a storm, the house built with wisdom remains standing, while the foolishly built collapses.
These storms are not much different from the challenges we face in life. It is inevitable that everyone has to face storms in their lives. Life is not about avoiding storms. So if you haven’t faced any storms, do not believe that you are a better Christian just because you haven’t behaved “badly”. You do not even know how you will react when faced with a storm yourself! Storms are the best for learning.
Please refer to Mark 4.
Here are some of the characteristics of a storm:
l Inevitable
l Reveals truth: People tend to deceive themselves. However, when faced with stress, the true self usually reveals itself.
l Never face a storm in isolation.
l Fear is normal
l You are never alone.
Back to Mark 4: The disciples, who are experienced fishermen, encountered a storm when they were in a boat with Jesus. They panicked and saw that Jesus was sleeping. They felt abandoned and woke Jesus up. Jesus told them they’ve got too little faith.
Faith = belief or trust. So, what should they have believed or trusted? What would a faith-filled response be?
Sometimes, when one’s caught in fear, one forgets that Jesus is there. Although it is easy said, but hard to do, one should stop for a moment & think about Jesus. Pray to God and don’t panic. Think of this as God’s way of molding us, and it’s ultimately for our own good.
We need to get to know someone well before we can trust that person. Same thing with God. One should concentrate on getting to know God better than trying to get more faith, because faith comes naturally as you get to know God better.
We can see that fear clouds our vision. The disciples panicked despite having seen Jesus perform so many miracles. The devil tends to put negative thoughts in you before positive thoughts come. Knowing God’s words better and having a stronger relationship with Him makes it harder for the devil to put in these thoughts. In fact, if one has time to worry, why not use the time to pray to God instead?
