Dreamix, a hair salon on Sussex Street (Chinatown area), is having a “hair model night” each week, where one can volunteer to be a hair model and get their hair cut/dyed/permed for free! You can’t really choose your hairstyle – the hairdressing teacher is one who decides on what’s suitable for your face. Anyway, the hairdressing teacher decided to give me a cut and a perm – so that’s what I got, while the other hair model got a cut and a dye.
I found the salon very interesting. When I first came in at 7.30, the salon was still packed with customers. It was a big salon and the equipments looked good. All the hairdressing students and hairdressing teachers were males. They all had funky hairstyles, and yet they looked pretty cool (unlike some of those “try-hard” people you see on the streets). They all wore very bright shoes and their styles seem rather “loud”, but still, they looked pretty cool (again, unlike the try-hards). Some were very good looking!
Nothing comes free in this world. Yes, even though we get our hair styled for free, we still have to pay quite a big price in other ways. They called us over at 7.30pm, and we had to wait until they finished up with their customers first. Then they started to cut my hair while the other hair model waited and waited. Then they started dyeing the other hair model’s hair while I waited and waited. The teachers also had to explain to a pack of students various things about hairstyling, and this reminded me of our lives in the hospital: a whole pack of us tend to surround a poor patient while the doctor explains stuff to us. All these hairdressing students started pulling at my hair at one stage. The hairdressing student who was doing my hair at the latter half of the perming process was very nice and patient – he burnt his finger from touching my roller and I didn’t see any flash of anger. Some hair chemical thing spilled from my hair because I was moving too much and he patiently mopped it up. Anyway, by the time I walked out it was 1.30am already (yes, past midnight). This type of perm is the best quality perm around and costs around $180 Australian dollars – so I guess I earned $180 in 5 hours….
